Juno Online Services started as an email only service and provided their own proprietary email client. They are no longer releasing new versions of their email client, however the email clients still work with a paid Juno account. They do not work with a free Juno account or with a non Juno account. The installation process sets up your new Juno account, or imports your old one, while installing the program.

Juno 5[]

This version is still supported.

Mail Storage[]

The mail is stored in the files mailbox.bdb and mailbox.atr. These files are Berkeley DB files. The utility juno5bdb can be used to extract the mail from these files if you want to move your mail to another client or if the mailbox.* files have been corrupted and Juno cannot recover.

Address Book[]

The address book is stored in the file addrbook.nv. This is a text file. The utility Dawn can be used to transfer the address book to another email client. It can also be used to extract the addresses into a CSV file that can then be imported into Juno Webmail.

Juno 4[]

This version is no longer supported. It still works, but if you contact their Help Desk, they will ask you to upgrade first.

Mail Storage[]

NOTE: While both Juno 4 and Juno 1 use the same file names, the formats differ.

The email messages are stored by folder in FOLDXXXX.FRM files, where XXXX is a four digit number. The FOLDXXXX.FRM files are OLE2 documents. They can be imported into the Juno 4 or Juno 5 email clients. A utility that understands OLE2 could be written to extract the email from them. A starting point could be the sample program STG: MFC Docfile Viewer from Microsoft which is able to display the headers and bodies of the email messages.

The file DIRECTOR.FRM is a text file that is an index of these FOLDXXXX.FRM files.

Address Book[]

See Juno 5: Address Book.

Juno 1[]

This version is no longer supported. It still works, but if you contact their Help Desk, they will ask you to upgrade first.

Mail Storage[]

NOTE: While both Juno 1 and Juno 4 use the same file names, the formats differ.

The email messages are stored by folder in FOLDXXXX.FRM files, where XXXX is a four digit number. The FOLDXXXX.FRM files appears to follow the MBOX format, or something very similiar. These files can be viewed by any text editor. They can be imported into the Juno 4 or Juno 5 email clients.

The file DIRECTOR.FRM is a text file that is an index of these FOLDXXXX.FRM files.
